Performance

Apple has made a pretty huge leap in terms of processing this year. The performance comparison between the two phones showcases it brilliantly. The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with an A16 bionic chip, while the 15 Pro Max boasts the A17 Pro chip, which indicates a generational leap in processing capabilities.

The A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers remarkable performance with its 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. It was made to run apps more smoothly, balance out the power management better, and enable swift multitasking. Computational photography and augmented reality were benefiting from the 16-core Neural Engine.

iPhone 15 Pro Max’s A17 Pro chip builds on this foundation and takes it to a whole new level. With a brand new 6-core CPU and GPU, processing is faster than ever before. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tasks are heavily enhanced thanks to the updated Neural Engine, promising a smoother user experience overall.

Design

The iPhone 15 Pro Max takes the familiar brutalist design of the 14 Pro Max and elevates it with premium finishing touches. It comes with a new titanium frame, making it one of the first smartphones to feature one. The Natural Titanium color in particular adds to the sleek build factor. At 221g, the 15 Pro Max is noticeably lighter than its 240g predecessor, but at the same time, manages to retain that substantial, premium in-hand feel.

The camera bump still bulges boldly, but protrudes less than the 14 Pro Max’s. Apple has managed to fit in larger sensors this year while maintaining the slim z-axis, and the button tactility remains premium. You can also notice on the very first glance that the Dynamic Island pretty much pops out tastefully, thanks to the 15 Pro Max’s titanium bezels.

Fundamentally speaking, the design and build factor on the 15 Pro Max is more or less the same as the 14 Pro Max, with a few thoughtful design tweaks here and there. Except for a more durable frame and lighter body, there’s not really much to write home about in terms of design.

Camera

The iPhone 15 Pro Max takes mobile photography to the next level with major camera hardware and software upgrades. The all-new 5x telephoto lens provides a very usable 120mm equivalent focal length, enabled by a unique periscope design. Stabilization across the tele lenses has also been boosted to give you crisper long zoom shots.

The 14 Pro Max came with a 12MP output which, to be honest, was very dated. The new 48MP sensor on the 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, can churn out insanely detailed 24MP and 48MP raw files, leaving its predecessor in the dust. But it’s not just the resolution, new additions like the Photonic Engine, Smart HDR 5 and improved Deep Fusion algorithms help optimize those pixels even better.

Video gets a huge upgrade with additions like ProRes 4K/60p recording, camera-to-camera log transfer, and the Academy Color Encoding System. What makes the encoding system crazier is that it’s actually been used in Hollywood. From the larger sensors to advanced image processing, the 15 Pro Max sets a new bar that competitors will struggle to match.

Battery Life

Apple made sensible, if not huge, improvements to battery life on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. During video playback, it estimates up to 29 hours on a charge – which is a considerable bump up from 23 hours on the 14 Pro Max. For streamed video, you can expect 25 hours compared to the less-satisfactory 20 before.

These gains of six extra hours for local playback and 5 more hours of streaming are more than welcome upgrades. While not game-changing, an extra hour or two of juice will help you get through busier days without having to worry about your phone dying out of nowhere.

The fast charging speeds also remain excellent, giving you a 50 percent charge within only 30 minutes. However, you would need a dedicated 20W wall adapter for that. The 15 Pro Max maintains the MagSafe and wireless charging features we’re accustomed to as well. Looks like the 15 Pro Max is pretty much the clear winner here as well.

Display

The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s display builds on the already amazing panel from the 14 Pro Max. The 6.7-inch OLED display remains sharp and vibrant with its 2796 x 1290 resolution, up to 1200 nits typical brightness, and smooth ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate.

Turns out, Apple did enhance it in a few key ways. Most notably, peak HDR brightness has now been bumped to a searing 2000 nits – up from 1600 nits we got to see on the 14 Pro Max.

Outdoor visibility is now better than ever, thanks to the additional boost to 2400 nits peak, up from the 2000 nits on the 14 Pro Max. They have also improved the contrast ratio to an incredible 20,000,000:1 for inky blacks. The display’s color reproduction remains excellent as well, covering the wide P3 gamut. Throw in the trademark Spatial audio, and you get a way more immersive experience while viewing supported content.

Operating System

The iPhone 15 Pro Max comes loaded with iOS 17, the latest version of Apple’s refined mobile operating system. Thanks to the inherent familiarity of the upgrade, long-time iOS users will feel right at home with the interface. New widgets have been added to the lock screen, letting you see useful info like calendar events, weather and more at a glance.

The updated home screen allows deeper customization too, while preserving that intuitive iOS feel. Visual tweaks like customized caller posters, better fonts and a color-coordinated UI boost legibility. At the same time you also get features like live voicemail, which allows users to listen to a voicemail while the phone is ringing, without even having to pick up the call.

However, this may not be an added advantage for the 15 Pro Max anymore since Apple is now rolling out the iOS 17 update for previous models as well.

Bottom Line

It’s not a game-changing upgrade, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max does bring enough advancements to its predecessor to make a compelling case for its win. Refinements like the Photonic Engine or the new periscope lens certainly make add a lot of value, but the A17 Pro chip in itself is reason enough to establish that the 15 Pro Max is miles ahead of the 14 Pro Max in terms of sheer processing power alone, making it the undisputed champion in this battle of specs.

Now, should you upgrade to this model from your 14 Pro Max, is an entirely different question. Unless you’re someone who works with a lot of visual content, or needs to edit stuff on their iPhone, there isn’t much of a reason for the everyday user to immediately ditch the still-trusty 14 Pro Max.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colors are available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max introduces an all-new titanium frame that comes in four fresh colors – Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium. This is a welcome replacement to the standard, yet overrated graphite, silver, gold and purple colors that were available for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. In fact, the new titanium colors end up giving the iPhone 15 Pro Max a more premium, high-tech look and feel. We recommend going for the Natural Titanium finish in particular if you’re looking for a clean two-tone aesthetic.

Does the iPhone 15 Pro Max have better water resistance than the iPhone 14 Pro Max?

No, Apple kept the water and dust resistance rating at the same high IP68 standard on both the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This basically means that either of these models can withstand being submerged to a depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes without sustaining any damage, giving you some peace of mind about using your iPhone around water.

How does the storage capacity compare between the models?

The 14 Pro Max came with a 128GB base variant, and built its way up to 1TB storage. This year, however, Apple has decided to ditch the 128GB model on its high-end model, opting for 256GB as the base variant, and 1TB as the highest option. Memory optimization remains pretty much the same on both models.
