The best workout according to your zodiac
Some people are lucky enough to love exercise. For those people, keeping fit and staying healthy doesn’t feel like a chore. For most people, however, it is difficult to muster the motivation to get moving.
According to astrologer and astro yoga teacher Emily Ridout, “The problem with working out is when you think it’s going to be torture. If you love your workout, then it doesn’t feel like effort.” Ridout suggests that there are ideal forms of exercise that align with each of the star signs.

Fire signs
The fire signs can be described as bold, passionate, and daring. Aries, Leos, and Sagittarius tend to do best with high-energy workouts.
Aries (March 21–April 19)
According to Ridout, Aries expresses itself by “initiating and directing the energy of fire.” She believes that the best exercise for Aries is anything high energy.
Running
Running is a great option for Aries: it is fast and has lots of direction. If you do decide to head out on a run, be sure to equip yourself with headphones and a playlist to stay motivated.
Leo (July 23–August 22)
Leo is the fixed fire sign, as opposed to Aries, which is directional. Leo does best with high-energy exercise that also enjoys the opportunity for some cooler elements.
Cycling
Cycling is perfect for exactly that reason: it is hard on the legs and will cause you to work up a sweat, while the breeze on your face will keep you fresh and cool.
Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)
Sagittarius can be described as the “swirling fire sign.” The best exercise for these people is one that involves continuous, flowing movement. Something like Zumba, for example.
Zumba
If you’re keen to give Zumba a go but you don’t know how to get into it, have a look for in-person classes in your local area. Or simply put a Zumba playlist on and dance away!
Air signs
The air signs are known to be social and communicative. Geminis, Libras, and Aquarius tend to enjoy more sociable sports, or something with an element of fun.
Gemini (May 21–June 20)
The Geminis of this world need to be fully engaged in what they are doing in order to stick to it. They need a form of exercise that will keep them captivated.
Tennis
For that reason, and also because Geminis love to make friends, Ridout suggests a partner or team sport, such as tennis. Other options include rowing, baseball, and lacrosse.
Libra (September 23–October 22)
Just like its fellow air sign Gemini, Libra is a sociable star sign. The best form of exercise for a Libra is anything that puts them in contact with other people.
Ballroom dancing
Ridout recommends something like ballroom dance. Libras can put on their dancing shoes at in-person classes, or even watch DVDs and practice from home.
Aquarius (January 20–February 18)
Aquarius is thought of as the “oddball of the zodiac.” According to Ridout, Aquarius needs a workout that is “off the beaten track,” and something that is really fun.
Martial arts
Ridout’s number one suggestion for Aquarius is martial arts. Other options include gymnastics or aerial yoga, anything a bit different and fun, really.
Water signs
The water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are emotional and intuitive. People born under these signs tend to like slow-burn sports, or anything water-based, of course.
Cancer (June 21–July 22)
The Cancer sign has a focus on strength, and Cancers are at their best when they have a strong core, both physically and emotionally.
Pilates
A great exercise to strengthen your core is Pilates. It has the added benefit of being movement-focused, too, which aligns with Cancer’s focus on being fluid.
Scorpio (October 23–November 21)
Scorpio is the water sign that’s all about physical and emotional depth. According to Ridout, it is best for Scorpios to do a form of exercise that has a slower pace.
Yoga
Something like yoga, for example, is a great form of exercise that gives a slow burn while connecting the body with the mind. If you’re not into yoga, try working out with resistance bands.
Pisces (February 19–March 20)
Pisces are at home in the water, as it’s their natural element. Anything water-based is great for a Pisces, whether it’s swimming, water polo, or aqua aerobics.
Swimming
Unless you are lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard, you’ll probably be looking to your local pool for an opportunity to take the plunge.
Earth signs
The earth signs are grounded and practical, and are known to have a great work ethic. They get on well, unsurprisingly, with sports that reflect these qualities.
Taurus (April 20–May 20)
According to Ridout, “Taurus is the fixed energy of Earth.” Doing something that has a practical focus, such as walking the dog, is best for our Taurus friends.
Walking the dog
While walking the dog may not be considered as strenuous as other forms of exercise, in fact walking is a great way to get the body moving and the blood pumping.
Virgo (August 23–September 22)
Just like their fellow Tauruses, Virgos are practical, but they are also detail-oriented. Anything technical that requires great focus is perfect for Virgos.
Tai chi
Perfectionists as they are, anything repetitive like Tai chi or vinyasa yoga is great for a Virgo. According to Ridout, Virgos are very good at understanding the body’s technical aspects.
Capricorn (December 22–January 19)
The final earth sign, Capricorn, has a mountain goat as its symbol. It makes sense, then, that Capricorns would like any workout that takes them up into the mountains.
Hiking
Hiking is a great option for Capricorns; Ridout says that it’s great for Capricorns to go towards a goal and be able to see their progress and how far they’ve come.
