Are you growing restless from spending so many hours at home?
Then take Nick Offerman’s advice. “Bury your cell phone and then find a hobby,” says the actor—who is also a talented woodworker. But with so many possible pastimes to choose from, picking one might seem like a daunting task. So, why not let your star sign guide your decision?
We enlisted the help of astrologer Julie Green, who owns and operates several studios in and around New York City, for advice on what types of activities are best suited to the various zodiac signs. Even better, all of these boredom-busting hobbies are easy to pick up, even during a pandemic..
Aries (March 21 – April 19): Zumba
Courageous and determined—with an enviable amount of confidence—Aries particularly excels at physical challenges. So, breaking a sweat while busting a move is a surefire way for this fire sign to unwind and de-stress. Zumba’s high energy style is especially good for Aries, who are allergic to inactivity.
This Zumba Super Cardio Dance Party workout features 30-second cardio bursts to really ramp up the heart rate and encourage great fitness gains. Studies show that interval training (working harder for short bursts) builds fitness fast. And, if you already have Amazon Prime, it’s totally free. Some reviewers say that it took them a few sweat sessions to learn all the moves, but strong-minded Aries will have no problem committing to mastering the choreography. If it’s too easy, it’s boring anyway, right?
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Gardening
“Taurus is never selfish, always ready to do the right thing,” says Reed. The nurturing energy of this earth sign makes Taurus the perfect sign to start a garden and see it through to its flourishing finish. Whether planting flowers, vegetables, herbs, or some combination, Taurus’s patience will pay off when those seeds start to blossom and bloom.
This garden tools set has everything you need to start gardening. Taurus loves good design and believes that even useful objects should be beautiful, and they’ll be very happy with these gorgeous wooden-handled and steel tools. Best of all, the set comes in an attractive, easy-to-carry canvas tote that’s rugged enough to stand up to dirt and wet grass.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Learning a new language
The more languages you speak, the more people you can communicate with. And Geminis are quick learners who are “ready to give advice to others,” says Reed. Their positive energy, coupled with their curious nature and love of exchanging ideas, makes language learning a joyful pursuit for people with this air sign. Geminis are also the chattiest of all the star signs.
Fortunately, this amazing Rosetta Stone program allows lifetime access to 24 languages. That’s a whole lot of new words. Geminis will love being able to express themselves in 24 new ways.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Photography
Cancers are highly imaginative, “but they also like to see immediate results,” says Reed. So, while artistic pursuits generally suit this water sign well, photography might be the best fit. After all, once you snap a picture, you have the final product. From composition to editing, there’s a lot that goes in to a great picture.
This digital photography course will give Cancer all the tools they need to take gorgeous pictures. With demonstrations and assignments to flex Cancer’s creativity, learning photography techniques and jargon will always be fun. Cancers also love to travel, and photography is a great way to document those journeys.
Leo (July 23 – August 22): Collecting
“Leos are more concerned with happiness than with finances,” says Reed. They have their priorities in order, and they also have their passions. Whatever Leos love—from novelty mugs to retro vases—people with this star sign are sure to find joy in organizing and displaying their collections—as well as in each new addition.
With this stamp collector’s organization and display case, philatelists (that’s stamp lovers to you and me) can arrange and re-arrange their collection to their heart’s content. It’s even the right size to fit on a bookshelf! Interestingly, a fear of postage stamps is called “grammatosimophobia.” Collection-loving Leos might have other fears.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Baking
Virgos might be shy, but they don’t shy away from hard work. “Anything they do, they do to perfection,” says Reed, which means tweaking and fine-tuning a recipe to yield the perfect pastries or the best banana bread is right up a Virgo’s alley. Those with this sign will find the process very rewarding—as well as delicious.
Detail-oriented Virgo will love this 393-piece cake decorating kit. It comes with absolutely everything you could possibly need to bake and decorate cakes or cupcakes, from cake pans to icing nozzles in different sizes so that every single element of your design can be flawless.
Libra (September 23 – October 22): Volunteering
Social butterfly Libras earn their long lists of friends with their cooperative and diplomatic natures. But these gracious qualities also make them ideal for volunteer work. Once those with this air sign find a worthy cause and a way to make a difference, there’s no limit to the good they can do. Volunteer Match is a website that matches non-profit organizations with available volunteers, so if you’re interested in volunteering or donating to a particular cause you can find wonderful non-profits nearby with whom to spend your time.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Hiking
“Scorpios are ambitious,” says Reed. “They don’t mind helping others, but they need freedom and space.” Whether following the trail or forging a new one, retreating to the great outdoors for a hike is a perfect getaway for this water sign. With single-minded determination (and the occasional companion), a Scorpio won’t stop until they reach the mountaintop—literally.
Even the toughest Scorpio has to admit that going uphill is hard, though, and that’s where these great trekking poles come in. Made of lightweight yet durable aluminum with cork handles (the best for comfort, grip, and wicking away sweat), these trekking poles come in eight fun colors. Trekking poles are great for protecting your knees, balancing on uneven, muddy, or rocky trails, reducing fatigue, and working out your arms, shoulders, and neck.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Meditation
Despite being a fire sign, Sagittarius has “a very serene energy,” says Reed. Introspection uplifts Sags and helps them “make good decisions.” Reed suggests incorporating yoga as well. Its emphasis on harmony between body and mind is a great complement to meditation.
It can be hard to know where to start with meditation, which is why we recommend this book containing 75 essential meditations. These meditations are designed for anyone to be able to do no matter how much free time you have, with practices from as few as five minutes to 25. For more meditation tactics,
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): DIY
Disciplined and self-reliant, Capricorns are uniquely suited to learning and mastering a craft. Whether they choose to make their own clothes, jewelry, or furniture, people with this earth sign like to take charge and “be their own leaders,” says Green. Once they’ve developed a particular skill, the real joy comes from the autonomy of picking their own projects. With this jewelry-making kit, crafty Caps will be able to design and make hundreds of different accessories. It comes with over 600 colored beads, and the clasps, hooks, and earring posts are made of high-quality copper to avoid irritating skin. Of course, Capricorns produce high-quality crafts, but not every sign is that talented.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Stargazing
Looking up at the night sky and contemplating our place in the universe is an ideal activity for cerebral and philosophical Aquariuses. These deep thinkers will revel in finding and observing stars, planets, and other celestial objects. Many of these can be seen with the naked eye, but for the best stargazing experience, Aquarius needs a great, portable telescope like this one. This telescope is perfect for travel; it comes with a travel bag and an adjustable tripod, and the many glowing reviews include amazing pictures taken with the included wireless camera.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Songwriting
“Sometimes Pisces just want to be by themselves,” says Reed. “But they’re always thinking of others and willing to communicate.” Combine that with this water sign’s artistic and musical strengths, and what better way is there to channel that creative energy than through composing original lyrics? Songwriters need a few essential tools, and this keyboard covers most of them. It comes with both a stand and a microphone and features built-in speakers and the ability to create music using either the inbuilt rhythms or the keys and sounds of many different instruments. It also plugs into your computer, so that you can build a song in the style of a big band, or a rock band as you prefer.
