Political observers wasted no time taking to social media Thursday evening after news hit that the Supreme Court would not rescue President-elect Donald Trump on the eve of his sentencing hearing.
Despite the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority – cemented during Trump’s first term with his appointment of three justices – the high court in a divided ruling denied the incoming president’s emergency request to block his Friday sentencing in his New York hush-money case.

And the internet quickly took notice.
“In 5-4 non-merits vote, the Supreme Court decides barely that the rule of law applies to Donald Trump,” Georgia State University constitutional law professor Anthony Michael Kreis wrote on his X account.

Legal analyst Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor and current president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, said on X that Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump appointee Justice Amy Coney Barrett siding with the court’s three liberal justices “cements their legacy as the more moderate, swing votes on the Court.”
“The request was all about timing,” Rahmani added. “Trump still gets to appeal, but he will have to do so as a convicted felon like any other criminal defendant. Trump, of course, wanted to appeal before the judgment of conviction was entered.”
Politico legal reporter Erica Orden pointed out for her followers on X that Trump’s now-rejected request was his “last hope to cancel the proceeding.”
MAGA world was none too pleased with the ruling.
“Preposterous!” Laura Ingraham said on her show as the news broke. “I think the court got this one wrong. I don’t say it just because I support President Trump. I do support the presidency though.”
