American bomb explodes at airport: all flights canceled

Near the Miyazaki airport last week, a World War II bomb exploded. As a precaution, all flights were temporarily canceled at the time. No one was injured in the explosion.

Miyazaki is the capital of Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan.

The American World War II bomb was buried at a Japanese airport and suddenly exploded on the runway. This caused a large crater in a taxiway and caused the cancellation of more than 80 flights.

Officials from the Ministry of Land and Transport said no planes were nearby when the bomb exploded Wednesday at Miyazaki airport in southwestern Japan. Investigations are under way to determine how the World War II bomb could have exploded suddenly, and whether other explosive devices are buried on the runway.
