Ex-Trump Aide Slams MAGA After Hunter Biden Verdict

Ex-Trump

A former Donald Trump aide has slammed the celebratory reaction of the former president’s MAGA supporters to Hunter Biden’s gun conviction.

Alyssa Farah Griffin spoke out in a piece published by The Daily Beast on Wednesday, following Trump supporters’ jubilation over the verdict against one of President Joe Biden’s sons. Fox News host Sean Hannity, was among them, posting on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday: “GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!”

Griffin, former White House director of strategic communications under Trump, said that the celebration is happening “way too soon, and way too ridiculously—in political terms, the conviction benefits Joe Biden, not Trump.”

In the opinion piece Griffin, who testified before the House Select Commitee on the January 6 Attack, joked: “After Donald Trump’s criminal conviction on 34 felony counts and Hunter Biden’s criminal conviction on three felony counts I have decided I am not voting for Donald Trump or Hunter Biden.”

On Tuesday, a Delaware jury found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony counts for lying about his drug use on a federal background check form when he bought a handgun in October 2018 and possessing the gun while addicted to, or using, illegal drugs.

Griffin’s humor was directed at the opinion that a conviction of Biden’s son, which the president accepted, is drastically different to a conviction of Trump, who is running for office, and railed against his trial.

The former aide said Trump’s crimes “are not equivalent” to Hunter Biden’s crimes, adding, “the impact of a second Trump presidency—and the threat he represents to democracy and decency—are on such a huge scale that MAGA’s obsessive salivating over Hunter Biden looks ever more and more absurd.”

Newsweek contacted Trump’s spokesperson via email for comment. Biden’s campaign declined to comment when reached by Newsweek.

Griffin and others have pointed to the fact that Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict shows that there is not a “two-tiered” justice system as Trump and his supporters have suggested.

“There is perhaps no starker evidence that America’s justice system, flawed as it may be, acts without fear or favor, striving for impartiality, than the criminal conviction of a sitting president’s son,” Griffin wrote in her op-ed.

Griffin also spoke to the two different ways each conviction has been handled by the parties involved and their families.

“Trump has spent the weeks since his criminal conviction invoking rage and retribution,” Griffin said. Meanwhile, the former aide said President Biden’s statement about his son’s conviction was a “stark contrast” to Trump’s rants.

“Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” President Biden said on Tuesday. “So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.”

Meanwhile, Hunter Biden said in a statement to Newsweek on Tuesday, “I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from [his wife] Melissa [Cohen Biden], my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome.”

He continued: “Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

Trump’s team also responded to Hunter Biden’s verdict. “This trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the Biden Crime Family, which has raked in tens of millions of dollars from China, Russia and Ukraine,” Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign national press secretary, said in a statement on Tuesday.

She continued: “Crooked Joe Biden’s reign over the Biden Family Criminal Empire is all coming to an end on November 5th, and never again will a Biden sell government access for personal profit.”

There is no evidence to back up the Trump campaign’s claims. In fact, House Republicans have been investigating such claims for over a year in an effort to impeach President Biden but have come up short on concrete evidence.
