A video of U.S. President Joe Biden at a D-Day anniversary event in Normandy, France, has gone viral on social media.
On Thursday, the Republican National Committee Research account on X, formerly Twitter, shared a video of Biden on stage alongside his wife, first lady Jill Biden, and French President Emmanuel Macron, with the caption “awkward.”

In the video, Biden shakes Macron’s hand and then turns to his wife before appearing to try to sit down. As the video continues, Biden can be seen slightly kneeling down and reaching behind, seemingly looking for a chair.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment.
The video was shared amid Biden’s speech in Normandy, France, to commemorate D-Day, when Allied forces in World War II launched an invasion across five different beaches in hopes of liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupiers. During his speech, Biden honored those who died on D-Day in 1944 and also spoke about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

“The men who fought here became heroes, given an audacious mission, knowing the probability of dying was real…But they did it anyway, knowing without a doubt there are things worth fighting and dying for,” Biden said.
“Freedom—worth it. Democracy—worth it. America—worth it. Then, now, and always. We cannot surrender to the bullies; it is simply unthinkable. If we do, freedom will be subjugated, all Europe will be threatened.”

A number of social media users shared the video of Biden on stage, with many criticizing the U.S. president.
“People are trying to figure out exactly what Joe Biden is doing at D-Day commemoration ceremony,” the libertarian organization Young Americans for Liberty wrote on X.
Steve Cortes, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump, wrote, “Patriot World War II veterans who are more than 100 years old can stand. But Joe Biden struggles to stand for a few short moments on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. What a disgrace.”

Biden’s age, 81, and mental acuity have remained a topic of discussion ahead of the 2024 presidential election, which is shaping up to be a rematch of the 2020 race between Biden and Trump. Many Republicans have called for the release of a transcript between Biden and Special Counsel Robert Hur, who led the investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Hur’s report described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” and many Republicans have called for the full transcript of their interview to be released to the public.
