You must have the correct documentation when traveling, especially if going overseas. Every year over 60,000 people get turned away at airports and immigration checks for not having the proper documentation. Not only can this be a huge inconvenience and an added expense for the individual concerned, but it can also cost the airline you traveled with a hefty fine for allowing you on the plane in the first place.

Rules and regulations can change anytime, as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic, so you must be on top of the situation. This is why it is more important than ever to do your homework and have everything in order before your trip.
Passport
If you are traveling internationally, you will first need a valid passport. If you already have a valid passport, check to see that it expires at least six months after you return home. The European Union enforces this rule strictly and may bar you from entering Schengen Zone counties if you have less than six months remaining on your passport. Also, make sure that your passport has at least two blank pages.
Many counties require you to have a visa to visit them; some can be obtained at the border, but many need to be acquired in advance before you travel. Again do your due diligence and find out if you need a visa before booking tickets.
If you need to renew your passport or are applying for one for the first time, send your application and relevant photos to the passport agency several months before your trip. Since the end of the pandemic, a record number of people are traveling, and passport agencies are backed up with applications. If traveling with a minor, ensure you have a letter of permission from both parents. Seeing a child with just one adult can be a red flag for border guards, so be sure and have documentation to erode any suspicions.

National ID card or a driver’s license with a photo
European Union citizens can travel freely throughout Schengen Zone counties provided that they have a valid national ID card from their resident country. In the United States, driver’s licenses are the preferred form of identification for domestic travel. Military IDs from any of the six American military branches are also acceptable.
Beginning May 7, 2025, any person flying domestically in the United States must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license. A Real ID driver’s license ensures that the person using it as ID is proof that they are who they say they are. Some states already issue these licenses, which are distinguishable with a star in the top right corner.
Health Travel Documents
While vaccination certificates have long been required for travel to certain parts of the world, since COVID-19, heath travel documents are the new norm. Since the ease of restrictions and the reopening of borders, proof of being vaccinated for COVID-19 is no longer required in many counties.
That isn’t to say that the situation could not change at any time, so take proof of vaccinations when you travel. It is also a good idea to write down the names of any prescriptions you take in case you lose them or need to acquire more.

Tickets and travel itinerary details
Airline boarding passes, hotel and Airbnb accommodation receipts, and rail, bus, cruise ship, and ferry tickets are necessary. Having all the correct paperwork and proof of payment can help sort out any issues.
Proof of medical and travel insurance
One of the most important things you need to consider when traveling abroad is that you are covered medically should you become ill or be involved in an accident. All the big travel insurance companies have policies that can be tailored to your needs.
As you have probably noticed, flying anywhere this summer is hectic. Airports are overcrowded, flights are full, and, as we have seen in many cases, are often delayed or canceled. To ensure you are covered in case a delay makes you miss an onward connection or your flight is canceled, take out an insurance policy covering the cost of overnight accommodation and meals.
