AI-driven voice interaction

Author and WillowTree president, Tobias Dengel, explores the potential of this transformation in his book, “The Sound Of The Future – The Coming Age Of Voice Technology.” He argues that the adoption of voice as the primary interface with machines extends beyond mere convenience.

It offers a more efficient and accessible means of utilizing technology, paving the way for a democratization of technology access.

Dengel highlights a key insight: humans can speak three times as fast as they can type on a keyboard, making voice interaction significantly more time-efficient. This efficiency will lead to rapid changes in the way we engage with technology.

Voice interaction has the potential to democratize technology, making it accessible to a broader and more diverse range of individuals. This shift isn’t just about convenience; it represents a fundamental change in our technological relationship. Dengel predicts that “every interface between humans and machines will transition to voice-first.”

Voice in action

Various industries are already leveraging the power of voice interaction to streamline processes and enhance user experiences. Traditional voice assistants like Alexa and Siri are just the tip of the iceberg.

Dengel cites examples such as Cathay Pacific, which uses natural language technology to assist with routine aircraft maintenance. Real-time voice alerts identify issues, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Furthermore, voice-control technology initially developed for military aircraft is finding applications in civilian aviation, improving communication and preventing accidents.

In the realm of everyday technology, banking apps are poised for transformation. Users will be able to simply voice their requests, eliminating the need to navigate complex menus on small screens.

Dengel also mentions a soft drinks manufacturer using voice systems to order replacement parts for machines and dispensers. This simple but efficient approach saves valuable time and resources that were previously spent searching through catalogs

Ethical and security concerns

The adoption of voice technology comes with ethical and security considerations. One major question is its impact on employment. While conversational AI may render certain roles redundant, Dengel believes that new job opportunities will arise alongside increased value creation through AI.

Security remains a pressing issue, with AI voice spoofing being exploited for fraud and blackmail. As AI becomes more accessible, the potential for such attacks to scale up poses a significant risk.

However, Dengel is less concerned about AI running amok, emphasizing that the technology’s limitations prevent certain harmful scenarios.

Preparing for a voice-powered future

To prepare for this shift towards voice-controlled technology, Dengel suggests a proactive approach. Cross-functional teams consisting of technologists, engineers, designers, communications experts, and business leaders should work together to identify opportunities and risks.

This collaborative effort ensures that innovations align with practicality and realistic goals.

This approach, inspired by industry leaders like Apple, can be adopted by forward-looking businesses and organizations to stay ahead in the evolving landscape of technology.
