Margot Robbie will reportedly earn $50 million in salary and box office bonuses for ‘Barbie’

“Barbie” has dominated the cultural zeitgeist since it premiered in July.

Margot Robbie will earn about $50 million for starring in and producing the film, Variety reported.

The film has grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office.

“Barbie” has proven that monoculture isn’t dead — and neither is the movie star.

The film — which grossed $160 million domestically during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo — crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office earlier this month.

That’s good news for Margot Robbie, the film’s star and producer, who is set to earn about $50 million in salary and box office bonuses, Variety reported, citing three individuals familiar with her deal.

Greta Gerwig — the film’s director and co-writer, who became the first woman filmmaker to solo-direct a $1 billion movie — will also receive bonuses due to the film’s success, according to Variety.

The outsized success of “Barbie” was something Robbie predicted all along.

While pitching the movie to producers, Robbie noted the film’s commercial potential, she said in an interview with Collider,

“I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!” she told the site.

The success of “Barbie” could inspire a range of movies that center around a given product’s story or origins.

While fans might be disappointed to learn that Gerwig is not keen on making a “Barbie” sequel, Mattel, the toy company behind the Barbie doll, reportedly has 45 movies in development that are based on other products, like Uno and Polly Pocket.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros said that the studio “has no comment on speculative stories related to financials.”

Mattel and a representative for Robbie did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
