James Gunn Addresses Concerns There Are Too Many DC Heroes In Superman Legacy

With fans being concerned that Superman: Legacy has too many superheroes in Clark Kent’s reboot, James Gunn expands on the purpose of additional costumed characters. Superman: Legacy is shaping up to be one of the most different Superman films in a long time, as other superheroes from the DC world are set to appear in the upcoming reboot. The film recently tapped not one but four additional cast members as respective members of the Justice League.

While many are excited about seeing more superheroes take part in Superman: Legacy, there are some concerns in the fandom that their presence will actually overshadow the Man of Steel’s story. In true Gunn fashion, the filmmaker has engaged with several fans on social media who have been asking him if he can elaborate on what it means for the Superman: Legacy cast to have these members come on board.

When talking to @WeaselCatcher, who was “a little worried the film will focus on setting up other superhero movies,” Gunn stressed that Superman: Legacy is not meant to serve as a platform to launch other spinoff films. The heroes are there to “tell Superman’s story better,” essentially saying they are supporting players.

One fan, @Mystr_j8929, asked what “compelled” the filmmaker to make these characters part of Superman’s latest cinematic adventure. For Gunn, they simply “fit the story” he is telling because he will always prioritize the arc, as “story always comes first.”

@ResonantJustice hopes that “the focus remain on Lois and Clark,” and Gunn assured the fan that it won’t be a problem. At the end of the day, “the primary story most definitely revolves around Superman and Lois.”

What We Know About Superman: Legacy’s Four New Justice League Heroes

Nathan Fillion, who has a long history with DC projects, having voiced Hal Jordan in animated projects, will be playing a different Green Lantern in Superman: Legacy, as he was tapped as Guy Gardner. Given that Hal Jordan and John Stewart will start in the Lanterns TV show, it is unclear if the DC Universe is going with Guy as the first Green Lantern, or doing the traditional chronology. DC Studios have yet to indicate if Fillion’s Guy will carry over onto Lanterns, but it would make sense if he does, since the DC Universe is set to connect its projects and universe.

Isabela Merced is set to play Hawkgirl, and it is very likely that Superman: Legacy is using the Shayera Hol incarnation, as while there have been numerous takes on the winged heroine, Shayera is the more famous version. Edi Gathegi is portraying Mister Terrific, who, interestingly enough, was a hero that Gunn had cryptically teased over social media several months ago, leaving fans convinced that he would be in one of DC Studios’ first projects. Anthony Carrigan was cast as Metamorpho, who will be one of Superman: Legacy’s more visually different heroes, given his ability to become any element.

While it is understandable that fans are concerned about the number of new heroes introduced into the DCU at once, it is also clear that Gunn is not forgetting that Superman: Legacy is about the Man of Steel first and foremost. Even though it doesn’t sound like the other heroes will only be used for cameos, their presence is to enhance Clark Kent’s story, not to make his DCU introduction feel like a Justice League ensemble film. Hopefully, once Superman: Legacy filming starts next year, things will get even more clear regarding how they factor into the story.
