Server-side update is here to fix the Pixel battery drain, as Google app is the culprit for it

The culprit for that battery drain and overheating issues was the Google app, it would seem. Something went wrong with the last update, but that should no longer be an issue.

Google said that a “backend change” (aka server-side update) within the Google app caused battery drain on a “subset of Android devices”. That was especially noticeable on Pixel phones, as the May update also played a part in the problem.

Following that, Google did confirm that a server-side update is going out to fix the problem. The company also said that the fix should be immediate, you won’t have to wait in order to notice it working.

This problem mainly affected the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 users, it would seem

It seems like this problem affected mainly Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 users, as it was noticed most on those devices. Some users even reported 50% worse battery life due to this issue. Luckily, it didn’t take Google long to react.

Needless to say, problems like these can be really annoying. We’re not talking about a 10% worse battery life, some people’s battery life got cut in half. Considering that Google’s Pixel phones don’t exactly offer blazing-fast charging, that is a considerable issue.

Let’s hope a problem like this won’t happen again, at least not anytime soon. It is nice to see how fast Google reacted to the problem, though. Also, considering this is a server-side change we’re talking about, the problem should basically disappear for everyone without a waiting period or anything of the sort.
