The 2023 Honda Trail125 is a current iteration of a classic.

Back in 1960, an Idaho dealer by the name of Herb Uhl modified Honda’s step-through 50 into a machine that could handle rough and rugged terrain. American Honda found out and sent the idea over to HQ where it turned into a production model by March 1961. A few different versions (such as the CT200 Trail 90, CT70 Trail 70, and CT110) were produced throughout the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. After that, the model had a hiatus until it returned as the 2021 Honda Trail 125.
The 2023 retro ride now receives its first updates since the 2021 reintroduction with a new, more efficient engine and a coat of new Pearl Organic Green paint.

The Trail125’s 1.4-gallon fuel tank is located under the seat. Honda claims the little four-stroke single gets an estimated range of 220 miles. (Honda/)
This new engine is plucked from its step-through sibling, the 2022 Super Cub, so it’s a fuel-injected air-cooled SOHC four-stroke 124cc single-cylinder. Compared to the 2021–2022 Trail 125, the bore, stroke, and compression ratio are revised for efficiency. Now, it has a 50mm bore, 63.1mm stroke, and 10.0:1 compression ratio (versus the 52.4mm bore, 57.9mm stroke, and 9.3:1 compression ratio in the predecessors’ engine).
The exhaust also sees some revisions, though they aren’t obvious from the outside. According to the press release, the predecessor’s pair of catalyzers within are replaced by a single, more efficient catalyzer. ECU programming is also said to maximize performance and efficiency, and alternator output has been increased. The easy-to-use semi-automatic four-speed transmission is still paired with an automatic centrifugal clutch for clutchless shifting.
Although it’s a retro throwback, the Trail125 has a few modern amenities such as this round digital display. It shows a speedometer, odometer, two tripmeters, a fuel gauge, clock, and low/high beam indicator. (Honda/)

No chassis updates take place this year. The mini dual sport has a steel backbone chassis, a 27mm conventional fork dressed in fork gaiters, and a pair of shocks. The Trail is fitted with 220mm/190mm (front/rear) brake discs with a single hydraulic caliper at each end and front-only ABS. This setup is an upgrade from its early ancestors’ setup that used drum brakes.
Spoked 17-inch wheels are equipped with dual sport rubber to provide traction on both road and dirt surfaces. A standard skid plate helps protect the belly from potential hazards if it reaches the limits of the 6.5-inch ground clearance. Despite its engine updates, the 2023 Honda Trail125 MSRP remains the same as last year, $3,999.
