The Home of ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ the Palais Garnier in Paris, Is Now on Airbnb for One Night Only

After 35 years, this spring Broadway’s longest running show, Phantom of the Opera, prepares to close its doors in New York City—but the famous Paris landmark theater that inspired it prepares to open its doors for one lucky overnight visitor and their plus-one with a special stay from Airbnb.

The opportunity to enter the draw goes live March 1, 2023, at 12 p.m. EST on Airbnb. Applications will be considered on a first-come-first-serve basis. To be eligible applicants must be 18 or older, have a verified Airbnb profile, and have a good track record on the platform. The stay will take place on July 16, 2023, and cost $40.

The guests will sleep inside the Palais Garnier’s best seat in the house: The Box of Honour.

Overlooking the stage, the Box of Honour—an opera box which was often used for visiting dignitaries—has been renovated into a lavish, opulent red and gold gilded bedroom.

The stage is graced by multitudes of ballets, operas, and concerts, held to audiences of an approximate total of 900,000 spectators each season.

This experience offers much more than a simple overnight visit, however. Guests will spend their time visiting the Opera’s archive, attending a private ballet performed by the Opera de Paris Ballet dancers, and seeing an exclusive recital performed by the artists of the Paris Opera Academy, complete with Champagne and hors d’oeuvres.

The guests will have access to a private bathroom stocked with essentials like soap and towels but are encouraged to bring their own toiletries.

An intimate dinner will take place in the historic dancing rehearsal room behind the stage—Foyer de la Danse. Guests will also have the chance to emulate the part of the Phantom with a visit to the story’s “underground lake” (a.k.a. the water tank beneath the Palais), home of the famed protagonist.

The promotion is part of Airbnb’s initiative to revitalize and restore heritage stays across Europe. While working with the Palais Garnier, Airbnb will help to restore the theater boxes and provide funding for the development of the Opera’s new streaming platform.
