“We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher,” Depeche Mode wrote in a statement.

“Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time.”

No cause of death has been given as of writing.

The origins of Depeche Mode date back to the late 70s when Fletcher began to make music with his schoolmate Vince Clarke. The two made music together for a couple of years before joining up with Martin Gore to form the synth group Composition of Sound.

The trio then recruited singer Dave Gahan to join as their vocalist and rebranded not too long afterwards as Depeche Mode. Although Clarke left the group shortly after their 1981 debut album Speak & Spell, Fletcher continued on and performed on every Depeche Mode album and release.

Celebrate the life and legacy of Andy Fletcher by tuning into Audacy’s Depeche Mode Radio where you’ll hear music from throughout the band’s storied career.
