The forest is a weird and wonderful place, full of twisted vines and strange sounds that echo through the trees. At the heart of this thicket, lurking in the woods like a predator, is a staircase that leads to nowhere. It’s a surreal sight, a towering monolith of stone or concrete and rusted metal, jutting up into the canopy – daring you to climb it. Do not climb the stairs for urban legends say you may never return. Which forest contains these forbidden stairs? Pretty much all of them, according to legend, if you go far enough into the forest.

Sometimes old and crumbling and sometimes appearing as if new and freshly plucked from a modern home, these steps to nowhere can appear with all sorts of descriptions with the only commonality being they go nowhere and are isolated in the depths of the forest. It’s the kind of thing you might not believe unless you saw it for yourself: a staircase in the middle of the woods, with no explanation or reason for being there. No walls, no foundation, just stairs leading up to nothing but air – but countless eyewitness reports and many pictures and videos have been shared across social media documenting the strange phenomenon.

Some can certainly be explained by fire or other destruction to buildings that left only the staircase as evidence of their existence, but many show no signs of being old or ever connected to anything.
While many have seen these forbidden staircases, the initial source seems to be a Reddit user claiming to be a Search and Rescue employee that wondered why nobody ever talked about all these staircases in the middle of nowhere. The other SAR employees were contradictory, saying they were nothing to worry about but also that one should never ever climb them because unexplained and impossible things will happen.
