New York City has ‘biggest snowfall’ of winter

All five boroughs of New York City saw a mix of snow and sleet Monday night that will continue into Tuesday morning.

Although it was not as much snow as other parts the Northeast saw, it was the “biggest snowfall” for the city this winter.

“While this is, historically, not a lot of snow for New York City, it will be noticeable, especially given the lack of snow for the city so far this season,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek.

‘Life threatening’ blizzard conditions in California

Winter weather continue to hit the Golden State, with the most significant conditions out of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Lake Tahoe area, near the Nevada border.

The Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Mono County are under a blizzard warning through Tuesday with total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet and wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour.

“Life threatening blizzard conditions expected with heavy snowfall. Travel could be impossible,” the National Weather Service said. “Do not travel.”

Los Angeles County and other nearby mountains are also expected to have moderate snow Tuesday, with the other parts of Southern California continuing to have rain.

Northern Plains get snow

A low pressure system swinging from the Rockies to the Dakotas has the chance to bring heavy snow across the northern Plains, with the heaviest amounts forecast to fall along the North Dakota-South Dakota border.

The region is expected to be hit with “banded snowfall,” which the National Weather Service says is a narrow corridor of heavy snowfall within a boarder area of light snowfall, making it “very difficult to forecast.”
