Jan. 6 final report: Trump deflects and pins blame on Nancy Pelosi

Former President Donald Trump slammed the Jan. 6 select committee’s final report, with the former commander in chief attempting to cast blame on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for the deadly siege on the Capitol.

Trump reiterated his allegation that the investigation into the attack, during which pro-Trump protesters breached the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results, was a “witch hunt.”

“The highly partisan Unselect Committee Report purposely fails to mention the failure of Pelosi to heed my recommendation for troops to be used in D.C., show the ‘Peacefully and Patrioticly’ words I used, or study the reason for the protest, Election Fraud. WITCH HUNT!” he posted on Truth Social.

The select committee’s report included a criminal referral against Trump to the Department of Justice, accusing him of partaking in a “conspiracy to defraud the federal government, and conspiracy to file false statement.”

The report included testimony from multiple high-level administration officials stating that Trump knew former Vice President Mike Pence “could not lawfully refuse to count electoral votes” and reaffirmed its belief that Trump was responsible for “inciting a mob to march on the Capitol and impede the work of Congress.”

The panel first launched its investigation into the attack nearly 18 months ago. Top Republicans have largely decried the investigation as a partisan exercise, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) having pulled all of his GOP selections to serve on the panel after Pelosi rejected Trump allies Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN) from serving on the committee.

Republicans released their own counterreport on Wednesday, which also accused Pelosi’s office of opting not to greenlight security precautions ahead of the certification of the election.
